so, as i said previously, i'm taking a class that's cutting my gym time by half and thus my step totals were way down last week. since the numbers really don't lie, i decided that i had to figure in walks during my free time on class days, so i came up with some ideas i'm calling operation: recoup lost stepsCollapse )

week 1 analysis [Feb. 15th, 2005|08:03 am]

hey steppers, i know you're busy getting together your week 2 data to send to me and fisticuffs, but take a minute and look at how week 1 went:

here are our week 1 totals comparatively with a group average. not bad, everyone! nice chart, fisticuffs!

below i made a daily analysis chart so we could see how the days break down. it's interesting to see how much more consistent we are during the week, for whatever reasons, and how the weekend can go either way. many of us have a spike on saturday while everyone takes a dip on sunday. enjoy!

and don't forget to send in week 2:

hey guys!

due to 2-days of internet outages at work last week, i couldn't get the graphs completed and uploaded, and then didn't want them to get buried with weekend posts. so, i'll upload the first week totals tonight and we'll create the second week on schedule.

yesterday, my boyfriend and i hiked to the base of switzer falls in angeles crest forest [just north of pasadena, off highway 2]. this is a really beautiful hike for anyone in los angeles looking to rack up 10488 steps in one outing, and it's easy too. i think we took 3.5 hours, including having lunch. most of the terrain is flat, and the portion that involves an incline is only moderately steep [we never had to stop and rest]. and you end up at the base of a waterfall, what's better than that?

in other news, last week my daily totals literally fell by half. apparently i rely on the gym for most of my steps and my lunchtime walking errands got nixed for the most part. i guess my commitment for this week is to find nice lunchtime walks and do them every day. i'm also considering adding a morning walk on days i go to night class, but it's such a long day as it is!

and, this weekend's experiment: does snowboarding register steps? i'm pretty sure it doesn't but i will wear my pedometer in the interest of science.

thanks for sending in your numbers, we'll be getting graphs out shortly.

we have numbers from everyone except:
piedpiper [i have half, send in the rest]
wonkyear

i don't know about you guys, but i just started a class and it cuts into my gym-going, so i will be seeing a dip in my numbers in the second week. it will be a good way to study what happens when i add 3 hours of sitting on my ass to any given day, and maybe make me take a walk at lunch. we'll see.

how did your first week go?

Hi, y'all!

Name: Laura
Age: 22
Location: Arkansas
Activity Level: moderate. I don't go out of my way to exersize, but I walk a lot at my job, and also I walk to and from college.

I bought my pedometer today at TJ Maxx, The Sportline Fitness Pedometer 360!
I didn't know exactly how to measure my step, so I estimated that it was about 3.3 feet. I am 5'10 ... does that seem right?

I recently just finished my Honors Undergrad Thesis & got very stressed out about it. My eating habits took a bit of a dive & now some of my vintage dresses don't fit. Plus, I don't want my tattoos to get stretched out. I like to walk long distances with my iPod and sunglasses on ... it's like Prozac!

some observations
i'm using a new model from last time, and it has a front-mounted reset button. i was doing the dishes this morning and my pedometer was right at counter level and pressed reset. so here's my official reminder to avoid counter-height things if you got el-cheapo model like i did. so to recoup my steps [i had only taken 30 by this point], i decided to shake my pedometer up 30 and forget about it. but i noticed that when i shook vigorously, it didn't record them very well. however, when i approximated a moderate gait, the pedometer responded as expected. so, there will be inaccuracies, but i think we make up for them in other ways and i'm going to choose to ignore them.

also, i'm planning a moderate hike in angeles crest forest for saturday, february 12. my idea was to take the 2 to camp switzer and take the trail along the stream [1.5 miles, easy] and then down to the base of the falls [0.7 miles on a slope, harder], maybe hang out & have lunch at the falls and return to the camp base in the mid-afternoon. this hike is very pretty this time of year and involves hopping over the stream on rocks a few times before taking a gravel trail. also, february 12 is the opening day of the belgian beer festival at lucky baldwins, so my boyfriend and i will be heading to pasadena for some beer tasting afterwards. if anyone wants to join us for the hike or both, post here & we'll trade info.
